Former London policeman Alan Banks relocated to Yorkshire
seeking some small measuer of peace. But depravity and violence are unfortunately not unique to large cities. His new
venue, the quaint little village of Eastvale, seems to have more than its fair share of malefactors--among them a brazen
Peeping Tom who hides in night's shadows spying on attractrive, unsuspecting ladies as they prepare for bed. And
when an elderly woman is found brutally slain in her home, Chief Inspector Banks wonders if the voyeur has increased the
awful intensity of his criminal activities. But whether relatied or not, perverse local acts and murderous ones are
combining to profoundly touch Banks's suddenly vulnerable perosonal life, forcing a dedicated law officer to make
hard choices he'd dearly hoped would never be necessary.

The body of a well-liked local historian is found half-buried under a drystone wall near the village of
Helmthorpe, Swainsdale. Who on earth would want to kill such a thoughtful, dedicated man? Penny Cartwright, a beautiful
folk singer with a mysterious past, a shady land-developer, Harry's editor and a local thriller writer are all
suspects--and all are figures from Harry's previous, idyllic summers in the dale. A young girl, Sally Lumb, knows
more than she lets on, and her knowledge could lead to danger. Inspector Banks's second case unearths disturbing
secrets behind a bucolic facade.

A peaceful
demonstration in the normally quiet town of Eastvale ended with fifty arrests -- and the brutal stabbing death of a
young constable. But Chief Inspector Alan Banks fears there is worse violence in the offing. For CID Superintendent
Richard "Dirty Dick" Burgess has arrived from London to take charge of the investigation, fueled by
professional outrage and volatile, long-simmering hatreds. Almost immediately, Burgess descends with vengeful fury upon
the members of a sixties-style commune -- while Banks sifts through the rich Yorkshire soil around him, turning over the
earthy, unsettling secrets of seemingly placid local lives. Crossing "Dirty Dick" could cost the Chief
Inspector his career. But the killing of a flawed Eastvale policeman is not the only murder that needs to be solved
here. And if Banks doesn't unmask the true assassin, his superior's misguided obsession might well result in
further bloodshed.

it seems that his latest case may be connected with an unsolved murder in the same area five years ago. Among the silent
suspects are the Collier brothers, the wealthiest and most powerful family in Swainsdale. When they start use their
influence to slow down the investigation, Inspector Alan Banks finds himself in a race against time...

investigating reports of child abuse, appear at Brenda Scupham's door, her fear of authority leads her to comply
meekly with their requests. Even when they say that they must take her seven-year-old daughter Gemma away for tests...
It is only when they fail to return Gemma the following day that Brenda realises something has gone terribly wrong.
Particularly worrying is the calculated manner of the abduction, and the fact that one of the 'social workers'
was a woman. For Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks ritual Satanic abuse is a dreadful possibility. At the same time,
Banks is investigating a particularly grisly murder at the site of an abandoned mine. Gradually, the leads in the two
cases converge, guiding Banks to one of the most truly terrifying villains he will ever meet...

Moving his ever dependable Yorkshire-based copper, Alan Banks , to the periphery of this work, the equally
dependable Robinson focuses instead on the tragic plight of a possibly innocent man charged with murder. In the process,
Robinson adds another level of nuance to his already fully dimensioned fiction and takes a quantum leap as a writer. A
schoolgirl is murdered on church ground. Her school bag is left open, and her clothes are disturbed. The local vicar is
already embroiled in a sex scandal, and his adulterous wife is wandering drunkenly through the grounds when the body is
found. Without a decent motive, but with a plethora of damning evidence, Banks is led to one Owen Pierce, a moody young
schoolteacher. Pierce is revealed as a man with enough minor aberrations in his life to fashion a believable criminal.
His smutty tastes in literature, photography and teenage women invite easy condemnation, and he is further burdened with
a past lover who nurses a deep grievance against him. If Banks has occasionally appeared a shade too decent and placid
in past works, this eighth appearance finds him with a new, sharper edge. Banks is still a kindly enough soul, but he
knowingly occupies a world that has suddenly become more richly treacherous. (Reed)

author's earlier titles superior to his latest ones. YMMV
